  • Welcoming Remarks
  • Panel presentation on ways to be proactive rather than reactive in preventing childhood lead poisoning, to increase lead hazard control activities and to reduce incidents of asthma and other unhealthy housing conditions.
  • Presentation on regulatory changes by states in Region 5 affecting lead poisoning prevention, lead hazard control or healthy housing programs.

Two Concurrent Educational Tracks

Track #1: Lead Poisoning Prevention and Lead Hazard Control Issues

  • Presentation on lead in drinking water based on the Marion County Health Department findings and including results of Indiana’s testing program
  • Presentation on recruiting landlords and contractors to participate in lead hazard control projects: recruiting strategies and obstacles
  • Presentation on non-residential sources of lead poisoning, including home remedies, cookware, spices and products

Track #2: Healthy Housing and Healthy Buildings Issues

  • Presentation on reducing asthma incidents through education and outreach
  • Presentation on reducing asthma incidents through housing inspections and elimination of asthma triggers
  • Presentation on unhealthy facilities: common problems and corrective actions, requirements and recommendations

  • Presentation on reaching at-risk populations through community partnerships and strategies to increase lead screening
  • Presentation on HUD’s new lead in dust clearance standards
  • Presentation on creating and publicizing a registry of lead-safe homes for the community

Track #2: Healthy Housing Issues

  • Presentation on IPM strategies and low-cost methods of bed bug eradication
  • Presentation on smoke-free housing and how to get landlords to buy in
  • Presentation on radon detection and remediation

General Session

  • Ways to effectively partner with schools for lead poisoning prevention and providing services to children with histories of lead poisoning
  • Presentation on the use of GSI mapping to gather data to identify asthma incidents, lead poisoning incidents and unhealthy housing conditions
  • Presentation on building community support and political will
  • Idea sharing and problem solving session
